Los Angeles (dpa) – US Olympic fencer Ibtihaj Muhammad is being recognized with a Barbie doll in her likeness, the brand’s official Twitter account said Monday.
“We are so excited to honour @IbtihajMuhammad with a one-of-a-kind #Barbie doll!” the brand tweeted. “Ibtihaj continues to inspire women
and girls everywhere to break boundaries.”
Muhammad, who last year became the first American Olympic athlete to compete while wearing a Muslim headscarf, thanked Mattel, maker of
Barbie dolls, for including her in its “Sheroes” programme.
“I’m proud to know that little girls everywhere can now play with a Barbie who chooses to wear hijab! This is a childhood dream come
true,” Muhammad tweeted.
Other Barbie “Sheroes” have included ballet dancer Misty Copeland, actress Kristin Chenoweth and director and screenwriter Ava DuVernay.
The Ibtihaj Muhammad doll will be available in 2018, the company said.
