Australian burglar drank champagne, passed out drunk

Sydney (dpa) – An Australian man has been charged with burglary and theft after allegedly passing out drunk in a bed in the house he broke into, police said Tuesday.

The incident took place Friday in the town of Esperance in south-west Australia.

The owner of the house found the alleged thief asleep on her bed after he had downed most of an expensive bottle of her champagne, Senior Sergeant Richard Moore told dpa.

Moore said the man had forced entry into the house through the front door. “Once inside he consumed most of the bottle of Louis Perdrier champagne. He then went to the main bedroom and fell asleep.”

“The owner returned home and located the offender asleep in her bed,” Moore said. “She crept out of the house and called the police. The offending man was arrested.”

The man was highly intoxicated when taken into custody, at more than eight times the legal driving limit, so officers took him to a local hospital as a precaution, he added.

“The 36-year-old has been charged with burglary and stealing and will appear in court on August 8,” Moore said.
