The 21 year-old American suspected of killing 9 people in a church in South Carolina - appears to have no links to South Africa.
Shortly before he was corned by police on Thursday, a picture surfaced of Dylan Roof wearing a jacket with the old South African and Rhodesian flags sewn on.
It's understood a white gunman, alleged to be Roof, walked into the historically black church in Charleston and opened fire on worshipers on Wednesday night.
Correspondent Graeme Raubenheimer reports.
The photo of Dylan Roof wearing the old flag on his jacket has sparked much interest on social media about the alleged shooters background. Some digging by News24 has found that it does not seem than Roof is linked to SA in any way. US authorities are calling the incident a hate crime. Reports have emerged that Roof's father bought him a firearm for his birthday. President Barack Obama made a live television address shortly after the 21 year old's arrest and said he was outraged and saddened. He believes this type of mass gun violence does not happen in other advanced countries.
