Growing healthy nails can be challenging for some, especially when habits like nail-biting, often triggered by anxiety, damage the nail beds over time.

Some people have found it difficult to break the habit of nail-biting, making it even harder to maintain strong, healthy nails. According to Elle, certain daily activities contribute to nails not being strong enough, adding that, having an unbalanced diet or taking certain medications can be the cause of that.

Online health publication MayoClinic states that your nails are made up of a protein called keratin where the nail bed is smooth and healthy without any grooves.

Here’s what beauty experts have to say about growing healthy nails:

  • Protect your nails: Dermatologist, Divya Shokeen, MD says, “Nails can become brittle due to exposure to harsh chemicals like nail polish removers containing acetone,” adding, “Limit the use of such products or opt for gentler alternatives.”
  • Use Biotin: Elle suggests taking Vitamin B-induced supplements or eating foods containing it as it helps with nail growth and they can make your nails stronger. The hub also mentions that studies support the use of Biotin.
  • Limit the use of gel or acrylic nails: Having artificial nails can be cute but overtime tend to damage your natural nails as, according to Healthline the UV light used to cue the nails can cause cancer.
  • Healthy diet: Diyva describes an ideal healthy balanced diet is a diet that has all of your four food groups. She also adds that you should eat food containing a lot of protein as it helps with your nail health.
  • Drink water: Water solves most of our problems as it cleans your internal health, and flushes out toxins in your body.
