Now that the summer season is officially a few months away, most people would be making extra effort to try and get their hands on a bottle of sunscreen.

The main reason as you would have guessed is to ensure that their skin is thoroughly protected from the scorching rays of the sun, by preventing sunburn.

But did you know that sun cream is not only supposed to be used during the warmer seasons?

Applying sun cream to your skin’s surface on a daily basis, regardless of the season you are in, can be beneficial to you in several ways. The key is to ensure that the cream you use contains a Sun Protector Factor (SPF).

“Sun protection factor (SPF) represents a sunscreen’s ability to protect against a specific portion of ultraviolet (UV) light called UVB. UVB rays are responsible for sunburns and skin cancer,” explains the skincare publication Hopkins Medicine.

Furthermore, there are multiple versions of SPF creams such as SPF 30, 50 70 etc. which add a different level of protection from the sun.

While most would assume that this can be avoided during the winter, Dr. Leventhal, a Yale Medicine onco-dermatologist, in a report to Yale Medicine has highlighted, “Unless you are completely shaded and protected from the sun, you still need sunscreen on cloudy days.”

Here is a list of benefits of using SPF as highlighted by the health and wellness publication, Healthline:

  • Delaying signs of ageing, like wrinkles
  • Fading scars
  • Preventing discolouration
  • Protecting from blue light
