WATCH: Trailer to controversial new Marilyn Monroe film

Netflix has shared its first full-length trailer for Blonde, a movie about one of the most enduring cultural icons of the 20th century, Marilyn Monroe.

Named by the American Film Institute as the 6th greatest female screen legend in American Film history, Monroe remains a valuable brand with countless books having been written about her, as well as plays, songs, and even operas.

One of the highest-grossing actresses of her time for over a decade, she died at her Los Angeles home on August 4, 1962, at age 36 from an overdose of barbiturates. Her death was ruled a probable suicide.

So, what makes it different from all the other Monroe biopics?

According to Polygon, "One thing that’s particularly notable about Netflix’s movie is that it’s an adaptation of a Joyce Carol Oates novel of the same name, rather than a standard retelling of Monroe’s life. In other words, it’s a frequently fictionalized account of the life of Norma Jean, adding plenty of salacious details that only exist in rumor in the real world — if they exist at all".

Polygon goes on to say that this 'method of scandalous retelling' is why Netflix has given it an NC-17 rating.
