Watch: The Sharpeville massacre comes to the small screen


The gripping story of one of South Africa’s most violent demonstrations against apartheid, and the shameful killing of innocent people fighting for their rights., is now the subject of the Netflix movie Jewel.

The stellar cast includes Connie Chiume, Michelle Botes, and Nqobile Nunu K.H., as well as Senzo Radebe, Robert Whitehead, Desmond Dube, and Lillian Dube.

Jewel is scheduled to premiere today, July 8 on Netflix.

The Sharpeville massacre took place on 21st March in 1960 on the day now referred to as Human Rights Day. Around 250 people were killed and wounded when police opened fire on a crowd of black people while they demonstrated crimes against humanity in the township of Sharpeville.
