On Monday night Kurt Darren was given the honour of singing the national anthem, Nkosi Sikelel’ iAfrika, at the Varsity Cup final between Maties and Tuks at the Danie Craven Stadium in Stellenbosch. Unfortunately, as was reported on IOL , he messed things up in the most spectacular fashion, much to the amusement of the players and fans in the stadium.
According to IOL, he started out but got the second verse horribly wrong, he sang the first line – “Morena boloka setjhaba sa heso” – but then instead of continuing with “O fedise dintwa la matshwenyeh”, he reverted back to the end of the first stanza, singing: “Yizwa imithandazo, yethu”.
The show must go in and that's what the much loved Afrikaans singer did, he made it to the end of the anthem. But, as is the way of the world these days, he was admonished and ridiculed on social media.
As quoted on IOL Cape Africa Tours tweeted, “And just like that Kurt Darren completely butchers the National Anthem! Check the Tukkies players chuckling to each other. Oh dear. “O ek wil huis toe gaan!” .
