Los Angeles (dpa) – Viola Davis has won the best supporting actress
award at the 89th Academy Awards for her role in the drama “Fences” –
her first win after two previous nominations.
In a tearful speech to accept the award, Davis paid homage to her
family, her co-star and director Denzel Washington and playwright
August Wilson, who wrote the original stage version of “Fences” and
adapted the screenplay.
“Here’s to August Wilson, who exhumed and exalted the ordinary
people,” she said.
Davis also won a Tony award in 2010 for the same role in a revival of
“Fences” on Broadway.
