Washington, (Sputnik) – President Donald Trump will be welcoming the country’s governors to Washington, DC during the 2017 Academy Awards ceremony, White House spokesman Sean Spicer told reporters on Wednesday.
“I think the president will be hosting the Governors Ball that night,” Spicer said. “I have a feeling that that’s what the President and the First Lady are going to be focused on, on Sunday night.’’
When asked to comment on the recent negative comments concerning Trump by actress Meryl Streep and why such comments were voiced at similar ceremonies, Spicer said he had no idea, but noted the United States is a free country in which people can express their opinions.
“I think Hollywood is known for being rather far to the left,” Spicer added.
In January, during the annual Golden Globe awards, Streep criticized Trump – without mentioning him by name – as a bully who has shown an instinct to humiliate. Streep referred to remarks and gestures Trump made during the presidential campaign when criticizing a New York Times reporter with a disability.
Trump reacted in a series of tweets that Streep’s accusations during her acceptance speech had no basis in reality.
The 88th annual Academy Awards ceremony will air on Sunday, February 26.
