Travolta: Netflix is Killing Cinema

NETFLIX and other TV streaming services are turning cinema into a ‘vintage genre’, John Travolta warned yesterday.

The actor, pictured, said big-screen films were no longer ‘as sought-after’ thanks to big-budget television dramas.

Both Netflix and Amazon Prime are making multi-million-pound series, such as The Crown.

Travolta, 64, told an audience at the Cannes Film Festival that television had shaken up Hollywood, adding: ‘It’s not so good for us who have established ourselves in human drama on the big screen, because they’re not as sought after, those dramas and types of movies.

‘We’re trying to hold on to a kind of vintage genre on the big screen.’

Travolta, whose major movies include Saturday Night Fever and Pulp Fiction, said acting had been changed so much by online TV that A-listers could take TV roles without it damaging their career, adding: ‘The old rules... have gone right out the window.’
