Tinder to offer criminal background checks

Could your perfect match also be a scam artist, stalker, or sex offender?

Launched this week by the popular online dating service is an app that will make users feel safer in the wake of the headline-making Netflix documentary ‘Tinder Swindler’.

The con-man investigated in the recently released documentary, Shimon Hayut, allegedly met women on Tinder before swindling them out of millions after catfishing them into believing his name was 'Simon Leviev', and that he was the son of Israeli diamond tycoon Lev Leviev.

This app will provide Tinder users with a criminal background check tool built into a ‘Safety Center.’ Tinder's parent company, Match Group, will partner with the non-profit background check provider Garbo to safeguard their users against any possible exploitation by those with criminal intent.

Garbo is described as a new kind of background check for the digital age, a lot of their work focuses on gender-based violence awareness and prevention.
