The UK bans live exports in historic victory for the voiceless

(Source : Instagram)

Animal Welfare organisations have applauded a new ban on exporting live animals in the UK after fifty years of 'relentless' campaigning. The new legislation came into effect on Monday 20 May and delivers on a key manifesto commitment to ban the export of live animals including cattle, sheep, and pigs for slaughter and fattening from Great Britain.

It is only possible now the UK has left the European Union, and will stop animals enduring abhorrent cruelty on long and unnecessary export journeys.

The Act will ensure that animals are slaughtered domestically in high-welfare UK slaughterhouses, reinforcing the UK’s stance as a nation of animal lovers and a world leader on animal welfare, boosting the value of British meat and helping to grow the economy.

PETA UK (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) applauded the move taking to Instagram and writing :

“After years of relentless campaigning by dedicated activists, policymakers, and animal protection groups, Great Britain is finally set to ban the live export of animals. The Animal Welfare (Livestock Exports) Bill successfully passed its final stage in the legislative process, with its third reading in the House of Lords. It will now receive royal assent before it becomes law. This historic move will spare many thousands of animals suffering and death on ships and lorries and many others a slow, terrifying death in foreign abattoirs.

Thanks to everyone who fought for this ban, including groups such as Compassion in World Farming and Kent Action Against Live Exports and the over 100,000 PETA supporters who sent messages to the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs”.
