Anne Frank wrote cheeky jokes about sex, contraception and prostitution in her diary – but covered them up, it has emerged.
Researchers using digital editing techniques deciphered the writing on two pages of the diary that she had apparently covered with masking paper.
Anne, 13 at the time, wrote on the pages on September 28, 1942, after she and her family went into hiding from the Nazis in Amsterdam. The Diary of Anne Frank has been translated into 70 languages with more than 30 million copies sold.
In the new pages, Anne, pictured, describes how a girl gets her period at 14, saying it is ‘a sign that she is ripe to have relations with a man but one doesn’t do that of course before one is married’.
On prostitution, she writes: ‘All men, if they are normal, go with women, women like that accost them on the street and then they go together. In Paris they have big houses for that. Papa has been there.’
Frank van Vree, who worked with the Anne Frank Museum on the project, said: ‘Anyone who reads the passages will be unable to suppress a smile.’
Anne and her family went into hiding in July 1942 and remained there until August 4, 1944, when they were deported to Auschwitz. Anne died in Bergen-Belsen at 15.
