The Brits academy has been under pressure to remove its gendered awards and has now announced that they are committed to making the show as “inclusive and relevant as possible”.
The move will see the scrapping of separate male and female categories as artists will be celebrated “solely for their music and work”. Going forward they will be replaced by gender-neutral awards in an attempt to make the 2022 music gongs more inclusive.
This means that next February, there will be prizes for artist of the year and international artist of the year, instead of best male and female solo artist and best international male and female solo artist.
