Sir Mick Jagger and Keith Richards pay tribute to Watts

The late legendary drummer Charlie Watts

The fellow band members were the first of a slew of celebrity tributes to Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts following his death aged 80.

Watts, who had been the band’s drummer since 1963 died at a London hospital on Monday surrounded by his family.

Seventy-eight-year-old Sir Mick Jagger posted a wordless tribute to his bandmate of nearly 60 years – he simply shared a picture of a smiling Watts behind a drum kit.

Richards’ tribute was also wordless, showing a drum kit with a closed sign. Sir Paul McCartney and Sir Elton John also paid their respects to the legendary drummer. The tribute by Sir Paul McCartney, as posted on his Twitter feed, was aired on Sky News.

Sir Elton John wrote that it was, "A very sad day. Charlie Watts was the ultimate drummer."

Watts had been replaced on the band's upcoming US tour by American musician Steve Jordan after undergoing a medical procedure. No cause of death has been given.

RIP Charlie Watts.
