Social media can land you in a lot of hot water if you do not think before you post. To bring you up to speed if you have not been following the story, Shashi Naidoo has been on the receiving end of a brutal social media backlash after she expressed her views on Israel and Palestine on social media. In one particular post she refers to Gaza as a ‘shithole’. The outcry was huge and she was immediately dropped by several sponsors including Glam Palm and Lil Jewels.
Despite her frantic efforts to apologise on her Instagram page by saying that the original and offensive post had been one that she had copied and pasted from a friend in an effort to ‘look smart’, sponsors do not wish to be associated with her. The latest fall out comes in the form of the racing and betting company, Gold Circle, who have announced that her appearance at this year’s Durban July has been cancelled.
Human rights and Palestinian solidarity organisation BDS South Africa, held a press conference with the South African TV personality to discuss the matter further yesterday. Shashi apologised and has agreed to go on an “educational” trip to Palestine with the SA Council.
