Serena Williams is serving up some sound advice when it comes to domestic violence. She feels quite strongly that the conversations about domestic violence should include both young boys and men..
She said in a recent interview,"I think expanding the conversation to men and expanding the conversation to young boys, it's so important. This is a human rights issue. We should all be treated the same. We should be treated equal. With domestic abuse, it doesn't care what color you are, what background you're from.” She also went on to say,"It's important to get the message out there — to our young men, to our boys, to our daughters — to let that new generation, and let the generation now know that, let's stop this. Let's change this. Let's create a better us."
The tennis super star is the ambassador for the Allstate Foundation Purple Purse initiative, which aims to help stop domestic abuse and what it calls the financial abuse that can accompany such relationships. It is often severe financial constraints that keep a woman tied into an abusive relationship. Serena has said that becoming a mother has made this issue all the more important to her. On June the 21st the organization announced that together with their celebrity ambassador they would be launching a street art campaign to educate the public about domestic abuse and to make the invisible weapon of financial abuse visible to all.
Serena will back on the court for next month’s Wimbledon tournament. Her dad, Richard Williams, will soon be inducted into the American Tennis Association's Hall of Fame. Dad Williams was the passionate coach of Serena and her equally talented sister from the time they were youngsters until they become title winning tennis champs.
