Living the adage 'age is but a number', the 95-year-old Queen of England has turned down an “Oldie of the Year’ award as she does not feel she meets the “relevant criteria”.
The young at heart monarch would put many decades younger than herself to shame with her indefatigable energy as she goes about the business of performing her public duties.
According to the organizers she said "you are as old as you feel" and sent a message back with her "warmest best wishes", and hoped that they would find a more “worthy recipient".
The awards chairman, author, and broadcaster Gyles Brandreth, had written to her private secretary Sir Edward Young to ask if she would accept the accolade. Brandreth posted the official response on Twitter saluting the Queen for her good sense of humour.
Popped up on @BBCBreakfast to salute The Queen for the wise & witty way she graciously declined the @OldieMagazine invitation to be an Oldie of the Year - & to thank The Duchess of Cornwall for presenting the awards to an array of worthy winners: oldies with snap in their celery pic.twitter.com/2i2Lpx2axt
