Media houses across the globe have been reporting on what the couple’s spokesperson says was a “near catastrophic” car chase across New York City by papparazzi on Wednesday evening.
The couple was allegedly hounded by the media after leaving the 2023 Women of Vision Awards Ceremony where Markle was an honoree.
In a statement emailed to the media, their spokesperson wrote, "Last night, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex and Ms. Ragland were involved in a near catastrophic car chase at the hands of a ring of highly aggressive paparazzi. This relentless pursuit, lasting over two hours, resulted in multiple near collisions involving other drivers on the road, pedestrians, and two NYPD officers. While being a public figure comes with a level of interest from the public, it should never come at the cost of anyone' ..
However, the taxi driver Sukhcharan Singh, who navigated his passengers safely to their destination, has spoken out to say that the dangers of the incident were "exaggerated".
Singh told his side of the story to the UK’s Sky News, saying that a security guard stopped him at the 19th precinct and the couple and Meghan's mother Doria Ragland hopped in. They had crossed a block and were in the car for 10 minutes, when garbage cans blocked the moving vehicle after which the paparazzi appeared and began taking pictures of the couple.
