Pope and Bono meet to discuss sex abuse cover ups in Catholic church

U2 frontman, Bono, met with Pope Francis in the Vatican City yesterday to discuss sexual abuse within the Catholic church, telling journalists after the meeting that the Pope was ‘aghast’ at the situation.

According to the Daily Mail, while sexual abuse was top of the agenda, the pair also spoke about sustainable development and the ‘wild beast that is capitalism’.

Bono told Francis that it looks to some, 'that abusers are more protected than victims'. Pope Francis is under immense pressure to reveal what he knew about the abuse. His trip to Ireland last month saw him begging forgiveness for the heinous treatment suffered by victims in Ireland at the hand of the church.

Bono said after the meeting to journalists, “I felt he was sincere and I think he is an extraordinary man for extraordinary times”.

The revelations of pedophile priests and the subsequent cover ups has severely tarnished the image of the Catholic church, some believe irretrievably. The question remains, will the Catholic Church be able to bounce back from years of these sexual abuse scandals, and will Pope Francis reveal what he knew?
