A representative from the Academy has told Variety that the Oscars will continue in their original format as an in-person telecast. What has changed is the date, the annual awards ceremony has been moved from February to April 25, 2021.
This was apparently done in the hope that by then theatres would have reopened to allow for more films to compete for the various awards. The Academy has also extended the eligibility timeline from Dec. 31 to Feb. 28, 2021. It has also allowed films that premiered on streaming platforms and drive-in to qualify.
The details of Hollywood's biggest night still have to be ironed out but the organisers are determined that it will be a live event. What will be compromised is the number of people allowed inside the Dolby Theatre.
All the upcoming details have been posted on their Twitter page.
It's true! Next year's #Oscars will happen on April 25, 2021.
