NME TO SCRAP ITS PRINT EDITION AFTER 66 YEARS

MUSIC magazine NME is to print its final edition this week because it is ‘no longer financially viable’.

The last issue will appear tomorrow – 66 years after the first – and the publication will then move to an online-only model. The magazine had already struggled financially, and in 2015 publisher Time Inc tried to save it by handing it out free – boosting circulation.

But Paul Cheal, managing director of Time Inc, said yesterday: ‘We have faced increasing production costs and a very tough print advertising market. We have now reached a point where the free weekly magazine is no longer financially viable.’

Musicians took to social media to pay tribute to the magazine. Lily Allen said: ‘RIP NME.’ Rock band Kasabian tweeted: ‘An icon is no more.’
