42-year-old Nick Carter said on Twitter: “My heart is broken. Even though my brother and I have had a complicated relationship, my love for him has never ever faded. I have always held on to the hope that he would somehow, someday want to walk a healthy path and eventually find the help that he so desperately needed.”
“Sometimes we want to blame someone or something for a loss, but the truth is that addiction and mental illness are the real villains here. I will miss my brother more than anyone will ever know. I love you baby brother.”

By his own admission in the media, he had had a difficult relationship with Aaron who had publicly struggled with drug use and his mental health. At the time of his death, Aaron was reported to be struggling with “multiple personality disorder, schizophrenia, acute anxiety, and manic depression”.
In March of this year, the heavily tattoed Aaron, documented a tattoo artist creating four new pieces on his face in a series of Instagram posts, one of which was a giant butterfly tattoo. The tattoo, above his right eye, was in honor of his sister Leslie Carter who died at the age of 25 from a drug overdose in 2012.
