The SPAR Kirkwood Wildsfees will be moving to a new home in 2025, bringing the curtain down on the 22-year association with Kirkwood High School.
Festival organisers said in a statement on Thursday that the move was necessitated by the department of education’s ban on the sale of liquor on school grounds.
From this year, the annual festival will be hosted in a purpose-built venue at the Mayogi bomas on the R75 between the two Kirkwood turnoffs from 27 to 29 June.
“To mark the occasion and the 100th anniversary of Afrikaans being accepted as an official language, a free concert will be hosted on Thursday, June 26,” the statement noted.
Festival director, Jenni Honsbein, meanwhile, said that they have the support of sponsors and stallholders, adding that “everyone was very excited about the new venue as we were also bursting at the seams.”
She said there is also a “historical link” to the new venue as it was the site where the bomas were built for the annual wildlife auction.
Honsbein said shuttles are being planned to take festival goers from Kirkwood to the festival's new home.
