Mzansi Magic's "Lockdown" has an all female cast

Mzansi Magic is bringing viewers another gripping series staring an all female cast.

Lockdown is set in a fictional high security prison and is about two women who landed on the wrong side of the law.

Ma-Z, portrayed by DawnThandeka King, is a leader who wants nothing more than to gain her freedom so she can be a mother to the daughter she left.

Her rival is the tough Tyson, played by Lorcia Cooper, whose goal is to have ultimate control over the prison and to dismantle everything Ma-Z has worked for.

The cast also includes Nomsa Buthelezi, who plays Slenda Ma Z’s lieutenant, Slindile Nodangala, as Beauty, the prison’s Governor and Lindiwe Ndlovu, as the ambitious warder Sharon, whose ultimate goal is to occupy the Governer seat.

M-Net’s Head of Drama, Reneilwe Sema, says the characters are authentically South African and their stories are recognisable in everyone.

She added that "viewers will alternately love and vilify them because they will recognise someone they know, have heard of or even a little bit of themselves in the characters."

Lockdown will premiere on Mzansi Magic in January 2017.
