New York (dpa) - US singer Mariah Carey has revealed she suffers frombipolar disorder, in an interview publicized on Wednesday.
She was diagnosed in 2001 but didn't want to believe it, so onlysought treatment recently after "the hardest couple of years I'vebeen through," Carey told People magazine.
"Until recently I lived in denial and isolation and in constant fearsomeone would expose me," she says.
"It was too heavy a burden to carry and I simply couldn't do thatanymore. I sought and received treatment, I put positive peoplearound me and I got back to doing what I love - writing songs andmaking music."
Bipolar disorder can lead to extreme mood swings between depressionand mania.
Treatment options include therapy and medication.
Carey has sold more than 200 million albums and has had 18 number 1hits on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, dating back to "Vision of Love"in 1990.
She has 6-year-old twins with her ex-husband Nick Cannon.
