South African-made movie Heart of the Hunter has made Netflix history just a week after its release.

According to the global streaming service, the film, starring Bonko Khoza, Masasa Mbangeni, Connie Ferguson, Sisanda Henna and Nicole Fortuin, has earned the top spot in English-language films on the Netflix Top 10 weekly rankings. This is a first for an African film.

Following its release it jumped to number one between March 25 and 31. During that time, it racked up  11 million views and ranked in the top 10 in 75 countries including US, Nigeria, France, Germany, South Korea, United Arab Emirates, Mexico, Hong Kong and Kenya.

Bonko Khoza took to social media to thank Netflix viewers.

The script for the film was adapted from acclaimed crime fiction author and screenwriter Deon Meyer.

Set in post-apartheid South Africa, Heart of the Hunter sees Zuko Khumalo (Khoza) in a race against time; armed with vital information he must stop a corrupt presidential candidate from becoming the head of state.
