Actress and writer, Lena Dunham has received backlash for her controversial comments on abortion during a podcast episode of Women of the Hour - the theme being women’s reproductive rights.
Dunham said she ‘wishes' she had an abortion after visiting Planned Parenthood in Texas. There she was asked to take part in a project where women shared stories on abortion.
'So many people I love - my mother, my best friends - have had to have abortions for all kinds of reasons. I feel so proud of them for their bravery, for their self-knowledge, and it was a really important moment for me then that I had internalised some of what society had thrown at us and I had to put it in the garbage.
'Now I can say I still haven't had an abortion, but I wish I had,' Dunham said.
On Tuesday, Dunham took to Instagram and posted her apology statement along with a graphic of the word ‘choice’.
In the statement, she writes 'it was a distasteful joke' and regrets what she said.
