The United States is reporting an increase in the demand for leg lengthening surgery from men who no longer wish to be on the receiving end of short-man jokes.
The procedure is typically used to treat skeletal dysplasia, bone growth issues, and bone length differences.
However, according to Sky News the surgery has become popular in the United States among men who feel inferior due to their lack of height. The news outlet also reports that according to Dr. Shahab Mahboubian, a surgeon at the Height Lengthening Institute in Burbank, California, he expects to perform 50 height-lengthening operations this year, more than double the 20 he did three years ago.
The surgery costs thousands of dollars, is not covered by medical aid if for aesthetic reasons, and the lengthy recovery period can be extremely challenging. However, it can add up to 6 inches (15 centimeters) of length to a leg.
