Kristen Stewart to take on the role of Diana in new movie

Lady Diana and Kristen Stewart

Thirty-year-old Twilight star Kristen Stewart is set to play Princess Diana in an upcoming movie that will focus on her split from husband Pince Charles.

According to Deadline the movie will chronicle three days in the life of Lady Di at the time she realised her marriage to the Prince was over. Titled Spenser, Diana's maiden name, the pivotal three day period takes place while she is staying in the House of Windsor at the Queen’s Sandringham Estate.

Director Pablo Larrain told the publication, "We decided to get into a story about identity, and around how a woman decides somehow, not to be the queen.”

"She's a woman who, in the journey of the movie, decides and realizes that she wants to be the woman she was before she met Charles. To do this well, you need something very important in the film, which is mystery.

He went on to say that they decided on Stewart as she is one of the most gifted actors of her time, "Kristen can be many things, and she can be very mysterious and very fragile an ultimately very strong as well, which is what we need, The combination of those elements made me think of her. The way she responded to the script and how she is approaching the character, it's very beautiful to see. I think she's going to do something stunning and intriguing at the same time. She is this force of nature."

Diana married Charles in 1981, seven-hundred-and fifty-million people tuned in to watch them tie the knot. At the time it was considered quite scandalous that the  "promising to obey" part was left out of the vows. They were to separate in1992, divorce in 1996 and then in 1997 she tragically died in a car crash in Paris.

While at first glance there does not seem to be much of a resemblance between Stewart and Lady Di, there is no doubt that with the magic of wardrobe and make up Stewart will be transformed. And while many may not agree with the casting, Larrain is convinced that she is the right choice to play the English icon.

Stewart was the world's highest-paid actress in 2010 and 2012, she was last seen in the movies  Charlie's Angels (2019) and Underwater (2020).

British screenwriter Steven Knight wrote the screenplay, he is best known as the creator of the television show, Peaky Blinders.
