South Africa’s legendary Carte Blanche anchor and investigative journalist Derek Watts was honored by family, close friends, and colleagues Thursday morning in a private memorial service held in Bryanston, Johannesburg.
Watch the service here:
Just last month 74-year-old Watts expressed his gratitude to his 'absolutely wonderful' Carte Blanche family upon announcing his retirement from the long-running investigative show to concentrate on his health. Watts was diagnosed with skin cancer in 2022 which then spread to his lungs. He passed away on the 22nd of August 2023.
His announcement marked the end of a truly remarkable 36-year career in front of the Carte Blanche cameras - a career, MultiChoice Group CEO of General Entertainment Nomsa Philiso said, had formed " the tapestry and legacy of the M-Net brand."
It is safe to say that Watts will never be forgotten, he has left an indelible and collective mark upon the people of South Africa whose lives he touched in so many ways.
He was in the words of the Carte Blanche team, “a man for the people.”
May you RIP Derek.
