Deadline Hollywood has confirmed via Twitter that Oscar-nominated actor George Segal, best known for the hit US sitcom The Goldbergs, has died at the age of 87.
Segal died Tuesday in Santa Rose, California, his wife Sonia Segal said: "The family is devastated to announce that this morning George Segal passed away due to complications from bypass surgery."
Segal was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance on Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf, he won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy for his role in A Touch of Class.
On the small screen he was best known for playing Jack Gallo in Just Shoot Me and Albert "Pops" Solomon on The Goldbergs – a role he was still playing at the time of his death.
Segal was also an accomplished banjo player. He performed with the instrument in several of his acting roles and also released three albums.
