Gorillaz will start recording a new album in September, says Damon Albarn

Blur are about to begin their first Australian tour in 18 years but their ever-prolific frontman, Damon Albarn, is already looking toward his next project...

A new album from cartoon cosmopolitan pop project Gorillaz.

"I'm starting recording in September for a new Gorillaz record," the frontman told ABC's 7.30.

Aside from 2012 single 'Do Ya Thang' - a one-off collab with James 'LCD Soundsystem' Murphy and Outkast's Andre 3000 - new Gorillaz material would be the first new material for the virtual outfit since 2011's download-only release, The Fall.

Their absence from the music scene had fuelled rumours that the group had split but Damon says he hadn't ever abandoned hopes of making a new Gorillaz abum.

"I've just been really, really busy so I haven't had a chance..."

"I'd love to just get back in to that routine of being at home and coming to the studio five days a week."

Albarn's Gorillaz co-conspirator, illustrator Jamie Hewlett, confirmed the group's resurgence when he shared a bunch of new artwork on his Instagram back in February.

Since then, Albarn's been busy with Blur's The Magic Whip, the Britpop legends' first album of new material in 12 years.

The band will touch down in the country next week to deliver a hit-laden set at Splendour In The Grass on Sunday night as well as playing arena shows with Jamie T in Sydney, Melbourne, and Perth.

Who knows? Maybe Damon can convince Blur to deliver the kind of marathon set that saw him literally carried off stage at a Denmark music festival.
