She also said that she is currently undergoing weekly chemotherapy sessions and fighting as hard as she can.
The 38-year-old singer, who shot to fame with Girls Aloud in 2002, thanked fans for "reaching out to check in on me" and apologised for not posting in a long time.
Along with a selfie showing taken from her hospital bed, she said that she felt that “now” was the right time to share “what's been going on".
Her fans, friends and ex-group members have rallied around her in support after hearing the shocking news. Kimberley Walsh in response to Harding's Instagram message, said: "My heart is broken. You are so strong and brave and we are with you every step of the way."
The group Girls Aloud was formed on 30 November 2002, in front of an audience of millions on Itv’s Popstars: The Rivals. She was chosen to be part of the manufactured five-piece pop group alongside Cheryl Tweedy, Nadine Coyle, Nicola Roberts and Walsh.
They were to go on to be named the highest-earning UK reality television stars by The Times at the height of their fame.
After they split in 2013, Harding released her own solo album.
