Lauren Jauregui is taking a break from Twitter after being slammed for her views on the upcoming presidential election. The Fifth Harmony singer took to the social media site to attempt to raise awareness of Dr. Jill Stein, the female candidate running for U.S. president for the Green Party. However, after several posts on Wednesday night (05Oct16), Lauren found herself lambasted for her opinions, and ended up announcing that she is taking some time away from the site. "I'm taking a break from this s**t," she wrote.
"Y'all can have your fun and make whatever assumptions about my character you want."Lauren had earlier begun her comments on Twitter by writing: "Did you know there's a Woman named Dr. Jill Stein yes DOCTOR who is beautifully educated and actually cares about people instead of money?" Did you also know she's running for president?!"It was at this point the criticism began, with the 20-year-old singer then attempting to point out she understands Dr. Stein won't make it to the White House in November (16), and so is backing Hillary Clinton for victory over rival Donald Trump.
"PS I'm aware a split vote is reality and that it's a bit too late, however I feel like we as a people need to do better as far as educating," she continued. "I am definitely with Her for the sake of not having Him in the White House, however, my point was to shed light on things purposefully muted. "Some of you are so mean damn..like yeah, I didn't know about Jill..and I shared it with people and then like all of this crazy s**t happened."
Lauren's time away from Twitter comes after bandmate Normani Kordei also temporarily quit the micro-blogging site when she was subjected to hateful and racist remarks online. The singer, who is of African-American descent, found herself under fire in August (16) after she appeared to struggle to name the best qualities of her bandmate Camila Cabello during a Facebook Live interview with Galore magazine. While she lavished praise on her other Fifth Harmony pals Lauren, Ally Brooke and Dinah-Jane Hansen, she kept her thoughts about Camila short and sweet, simply describing her as "quirky" and "cute".
Her blunt response sparked rumours of a feud between the two stars, and prompted fans to take sides. Normani subsequently took to Twitter to dismiss the "foolishness" of some trolls' comments, revealing she had become accustomed to being the target of "unjust hate and slander", but the following day, she had had enough and told fans she could no longer stand being tormented by racists online. She rejoined the site after an extended hiatus on 13 September (16), to announce her new role as a diversity ambassador for non-profit organisation Cybersmile Foundation, which helps victims of online abuse.
