The 2007 ‘Charlie bit my finger!’ video, famous for formerly being the most viewed video on YouTube, has gone under the hammer.
As of December 2020, it had received over 878 million views – and now it’s fetched its owners the princely sum of R10.5m.
Howard Davies-Carr, the father of the stars of the video, decided to auction off the nearly 14-year-old clip before the original will be deleted from YouTube forever.
It is one of the most recognizable viral videos on the social media platform, which the brothers and their father, who filmed the original and posted it online, believe made it worth selling as an NFT.
NFTs, or non-fungible tokens, are pieces of digital “art” that are sold on the blockchain, with this video to be sold over the Ethereum blockchain, according to the New York Post.
Bidding started at $1,000 over the weekend. The auction history shows that “3fmusic” beat out “meme master” with a bid for $760,999 on Sunday which translates to R10.5m
The video is 56-seconds long and features the brothers sitting in a chair together when Harry puts his finger into Charlie's mouth and gets bitten. Harry, was aged three at the time, and Charlie, aged one – the reaction on the part of both the brothers was priceless.
Davies-Carr has said that the huge popularity of the clip came as the biggest surprise to himself and his family. He had posted it online for the children’s Godparents to enjoy never realizing that it was to go down in internet history.
