Emmy nominations overshadowed by imminent strike in the industry

Writers in the US are currently on strike citing many of the same complaints as actors (Source: Twitter)

The much anticipated 2023 Emmy nominations were announced on July 12th against the backdrop of an imminent strike in the industry over pay and the use of AI.

SAG-AFTRA, which represents 160,000 actors around the world has agreed to a request from major production studios to discuss longstanding rows over pay and the use of artificial intelligence. However, the latest news reports that the union has recommended a strike after talks with Hollywood studios failed to reach an agreement. The vote will take place later today.

The union says streaming services are not playing fair when it comes to remuneration, and are losing money from residuals with actors and writers now getting very little pay when their shows are watched.

There are also fears more studios will use AI in their writing and production.

If a strike goes ahead, and actors join the striking US writers, Hollywood would almost immediately shut down.

This would in all likelihood affect the London premiere of Oppenheimer which is due to take place tonight, Thursday 13 July.
