Fans young and old will remember the Emmy-winning actor for his various roles in a prestigious career that saw him rack up over 300 acting credits and win multiple awards.
In a statement posted Sunday on his official Twitter account, his children announced the news of his passing saying: "We are sorry to say that our beloved patriarch passed away this morning peacefully.
"Words cannot express the sadness we feel. With a kiss on your head- Goodnight dad. We love you."

An older generation will remember Asner in the role of Lou Grant in The Mary Tyler Moore Show back in the ’70s, he was a constant in the show for seven seasons, winning three best-supporting actor Emmys for his performance over the years. Asner also won Emmy's for his roles in the miniseries Rich Man, Poor Man, and Roots.
To a younger generation, he will be known for playing Carl Frederickson in Pixar’s 2009 animated hit Up and Will Ferrell's family favorite Christmas film Elf, in which he played Santa Claus.
