The National Prosecuting Authority said Themba Sonnyboy Sekowe, aka DJ Maphorisa, appeared in court on Monday on a gender-based violence-related matter.
NPA spokesperson, Phindi Mjonondwane, said Maphorisa faces charges of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
She said the related to an incident on Sunday when he allegedly assaulted his girlfriend, Thulisile Phongolo, by striking her with open hands and strangling her.
Mjonondwane says the alleged attack occurred after she had confronted him about an incident that happened the previous night where he was booked to perform.
She said the complainant laid a charge with Sandton SAPS and Sekowe was arrested.
However, Mjonondwane said that Phongolo had filed “a withdrawal statement” and was before the court where she agreed that the accused be released on bail.
The court set bail in the amount of R4000.
The NPA said Sekowe’s case was remanded to 14 June for him to lodge representations to the National Prosecuting Authority, in light of the withdrawal statement filed by the complainant.
