On the heels of Adele’s record-shattering album 25, Coldplay is boldly entering the billboard arena with its own high-profile record A Head Full of Dreams, which first made headlines for its incredible list of featured artistsincluding Beyoncé, Blue Ivy Carter, Barack Obama, and Gwyneth Paltrow. And on Monday, Coldplay unleashed the first of its starry singles into this unworthy world—“Hymn for the Weekend,” which features Queen Bey’s heavenly voice wafting through what Rolling Stone describes as “rattling pianos and funky percussion” in a track that is “spacey and dreamy-sounding.” Lyrics include “Drink for me, drink for me” and “shoot across the sky.”
During a BBC interview on Monday, Coldplay’s bassist Guy Berryman explained how this collaboration came to be: “Chris was wanting to write a sort of party song,” Berryman said. “The words were ‘Drinks on me, drinks on me.’ And we said to him, 'You can't say that. You can't get away with that.' Then the whole story of the song changed and then he asked Beyoncé to sing on it, and she very kindly said she would. And it was amazing. She came in. She did her thing. She's unbelievably professional. I think she was in and out in five minutes. And we are so blessed to sing on one of our songs.”
Coldplay's new album A Head Full of Dreams drops on Friday, so prepare accordingly for the chart showdown with Adele.
