According to AFP the Clegg family has given an emphatic no to Raggy Charters owner Lloyd Edwards plans to use the music of the legendary singer to lure predators for his deep-sea viewing excursions.
As Edwards had stated in an interview with Algoa FM’s Roland Gaspar just last month, the plan was to lower underwater speakers playing Clegg's music to attract white sharks in the southern Algoa Bay while also giving the operation a distinctly African feel. He told Gaspar that the technique was developed in Australia and operators there have been using music to lure sharks and other predators for many years now with the first genre of music ever used being heavy metal.
However Edwards will now have to find another source of music as Clegg’s manager Roddy Quin told AFP that it would be contrary to Clegg’s values. Quin went on to tell the news agency that "Johnny would have hated to lure any kind of wildlife into any condition that wasn't natural. And if they were going to use his music to lure sharks into certain areas, he would have been very unhappy with that because he would never interfere with any kind of wildlife in their natural habitat whatsoever."
Edwards told AFP that he completely respects the family’s wishes.
The iconic singer and activist died in July last year at the age of 66 after a long battle with cancer. A tribute concert was to have been held in his honour on the 25th April but due to the COVID-19 pandemic Real Concerts has moved it to the 18th July. In all likelihood, this date might have to be changed again.
