American actress Cicely Tyson will be receiving an honourary Oscar.
The 93-year-old actress received her first and only Oscar nomination in 1972 for her role in Sounder. She lost the award to Liza Minnelli for Cabaret.
In an interview with the Associated Press, Tyson said she didn't expect the news and thought to herself, “I hadn’t done a major movie since ‘The Help."
She added, “I am extremely grateful to the Board that they even know my name.”
Honourary awards are given for "lifetime achievements, exceptional contributions to motion picture arts and sciences and outstanding service to the Academy"
Tyson holds three Emmys, a Presidential Medal of Freedom by Barack Obama and is a Kennedy Center honouree.
