The Marvel actor has decided to take some time out to spend with his family after receiving the news that he has a much higher-than-average chance of developing Alzheimer's disease.
The discovery was made while he was working on the new National Geographic docuseries Limitless. The show, produced by filmmaker Darren Aronofsky, features Hemsworth “exploring the aging process with doctors and researchers and engaging in challenges, travel, and training designed to extend the lifespan as long as possible”.
Throughout the series Hemsworth can be seen undergoing multiple genetic tests to see what the future might have in store for him.
In episode Five he receives the news that his genetic makeup includes two copies of the APOE4 gene, one from his mother, and the other from his father. Together studies have shown this to be linked to an increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease.
For Hemsworth, it means he is eight to 10 times more likely to develop the disease.
In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Hemsworth opens up about the diagnosis. Read the full article as shared by the magazine on Twitter.
"We like to avoid speaking about death in the hope that we'll somehow avoid it," Hemsworth tells VF. "To all of a sudden be told some big indicators are actually pointing to this as the route which is going to happen, the reality of it sinks in." https://t.co/kbxV0k1QDH
