Caster Semenya included in TIME's 100 Most Influential People of 2019

South African middle-distance runner and 2016 Olympic gold medalist, Caster Semenya, has been named one of TIME magazine's 100 Most Influential People of 2019.

Amongst those gracing the issue are Dwayne Johnson, Taylor Swift, Sandra Oh, Gayle King, soccer star Mohamed Salah and Nancy Pelosi.

The categories for the issue are divided into pioneers, artists, leaders, icons and titans, with celebrities dominating the list.

Caster features in the icons category alongside Taylor Swift, Michelle Obama, Lady Gaga and Spike Lee.

Former Olympic gold medalist and track and field athlete, Edwin Moses, wrote saying "Caster Semenya has taught us that sex isn't always binary and caused us to question the justness of distributing societal benefits according to "male" and "female" classifications."

About her efforts in making strides in sports eligibility, he says: "But however it is addressed, Semenya will have already made a singular historical contribution to our understanding of biological sex."

Trevor Noah and President Cyril Ramaphosa are also included on the list.
