Aidan Turner has confessed to being the brains behind his famous topless scene in period drama Poldark. The Irish actor won legions of fans when he took on the role of Ross Poldark in the 2015 TV series, with his topless scything scene in season one particularly memorable for many. And now, Turner has admitted he was the one who dreamed up the now infamous shot.
"It was never in the script that he takes his top off ? it just made sense to me," he told Radio Times magazine. "That?s the worst thing about it. It was my b**ody idea." Turner, who initially gained Hollywood fame as dwarf Kili in the Peter Jackson trilogy The Hobbit, added that the scene was never supposed to be sexy. However, it has since gone down in television history and earned the actor hordes of 'Sexiest Male' gongs.
"It was probably a huge mistake," he told British newspaper the Daily Mirror at the launch of the second series of Poldark on Monday. "But Poldark's out in the fields, it's a really hot day, there's a lot of work, and it wouldn't have made sense with a top on."It was never supposed to be sexually provocative. So when the show came out and it all kicked off, I was a bit surprised. But it kind of put the show on the map."The scene drew a huge nine million viewers when it aired in the U.K., and images of his impressive physique went viral on social media. Poldark makes its return to U.K. TV screens on 4 September.
