The Afrikaans Ghoema Music awards that were beset by much controversy this year, will continue with kykNET as a sponsor but without Heidi Edeling as CEO.
In April of this year, before the 8th annual Ghoema awards, sponsor Multichoice demanded the removal of Die Land as a nominee as the music video featured controversial Afrikaans singer Steve Hofmeyr. They said that if it was not removed they would withdraw their sponsorship, the Ghoema’s conceded.
Although originally scheduled as a live awards broadcast, the event was subsequently screened as an edited programme.
After the first meeting this week since the much beleaguered awards evening, the Ghoema Management has decided to continue with the awards despite the many challenges they face.
The Ghoema Music Awards are presented by the Ghoema Trust to recognize outstanding achievement in the Afrikaans Music Industry. It is the only independent music award ceremony of its genre in South Africa. The event was established in 2012.
