Actress Rebel Wilson's defamation payout from Bauer slashed

Canberra (dpa) - Hollywood actress Rebel Wilson's defamation payout has been slashed after a successful court appeal in Australia by magazine publisher Bauer Media.

The "Pitch Perfect" and "Bridesmaids" star had originally been awarded 4.5 million Australian dollars (3.6 million US dollars) in damages after being defamed in a series of magazine articles.

The Germany-based publisher did not appeal the verdict but did claim the amount of the payment was excessive.

The Court of Appeal in Melbourne ruled Thursday that Bauer will now have to pay the actress 600,000 dollars.

Wilson, 38, was not present in court.

She won a high-profile court battle in June last year after Bauer printed eight articles in 2015 which claimed she fabricated untruths about her real name, age and childhood.

She alleged the articles defamed her and damaged her career and caused her to be sacked from major films "Trolls" and "Kung Fu Panda3" because she was considered "too divisive."

The original payout awarded by the Supreme Court in September was thelargest amount in defamation damages ordered in Australia.

It included 650,000 dollars in general damages, as well as 3.9million dollars in special damages.

But the court on Thursday found there was no basis for her to beawarded financial or special damages for the potential loss of rolesand also reduced general damages from 650,000 to 600,000 dollars.

Before the verdict, Wilson took to Twitter, saying the "case was never about the money for me."

"As I've said before, I have already won the case and this is unchallenged!"
