Hailing from Crossroads in Cape Town, the ambitious chess prodigy has earned the chance to represent SA at the World Cadets Championship 2023 in Egypt.
Scheduled to take place from October 14th to 27th, the championship will mark an important milestone in Imkhitha’s chess career.
The youngster has faced many challenges along the way and over a three-year period been awarded the title of top-ranked player in the Western Cape and second-ranked player in South Africa, with a chess rating of 1501!
The only obstacle that stands in her way is finding the financial resources to get her to the competition. Her committed coach, Thando Hlakula, has started a crowdfunding campaign and writes of Imkhitha in her appeal for assistance :
“Imkhitha's voyage in the realm of chess is as awe-inspiring as it gets. With only three short years devoted to the game, her growth has been meteoric. Hailing from Crossroads, a disadvantaged community, Imkhitha's determination has seen her rise above challenges to reach where she stands today”.
“Imagine the immense potential she carries within her, the dreams she nurtures, and the aspirations she embodies. This journey to the World Cadets Chess Championship is more than a mere tournament – it's a life-changing opportunity, a beacon of hope for countless other young minds from disadvantaged backgrounds who dare to dream beyond the confines of their circumstances.”
