'Oppenheimer' sex scene sparks outrage in India

Cillian Murphy as US physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer

A sex scene in the box office smash hit Oppenheimer has sparked outrage in India with many Hindu right-wing groups threatening to boycott the nuclear arms biopic.

The scene in question features US physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer (played by Cillian Murphy) reciting a verse from the Bhagavad Gita, a sacred Hindu scripture, before having sex.

It has been labeled a "scathing attack on Hinduism" and a “deliberate assault on Indian civilization” by the Save Culture Save India (SCSI) Foundation.

In an open letter to the film’s director Christopher Nolan, the group’s founder, Uday Mahurkar, called for the scene to be  "investigated... on an urgent basis" and asked for those involved to be "severely punished".

Mahurkars titled the letter," Oppenheimer's disturbing attack on Hinduism", saying: "We do not know the motivation and logic behind this unnecessary scene on [the] life of a scientist.

"But this is a direct assault on the religious beliefs of a billion tolerant Hindus, rather it amounts to waging a war on the Hindu community and almost appears to be part of a larger conspiracy by anti-Hindu forces."

He signed off by saying: “ Eagerly await needful action.  Warm regards Uday Mahurkar."

Sky News reports that the UK cinema chain, Vue International, had its biggest weekend for ticket sales in four years following the release of Oppenheimer over the weekend.
